Mind Your Step

I’m taking you back a few years now! Playing on the concepts of perspective illusion, Mind Your Step is a street art installation by Swedish photographer and retouch artist Erik Johansson. He was able to create the large-scale illusionary piece after being chosen by Generation 7, a project that gives seven young people the chance to realise their creative dream.

Johansson’s idea was to place a photo in a public environment and trick people into perceiving depth in the image. “Street illusions [aren't] something new, but I wanted to try to make it as a photo instead of drawing and painting the streets,” he says. Photography is Johansson’s main medium and he aimed to create an illusion that looked as realistic as possible. The result was Mind Your Step, an illusionary image that measured 32 x 18 meters and was on display at Segels Torg in Stockholm.

Be sure to check out Johansson’s blog, where he documented the entire creative process from the original sketches right up until the opening of the installation.
